With the largest privately owned textile archive in the world, it’s no surprise that GP & J Baker is one of our top fabric suppliers. Based in Chelsea Harbour’s Design Centre, the company that also produces wallpaper, furniture and trimmings, is an obvious go-to source for Sue Whimster and our clients, providing a vast range of textiles to suit all tastes, from the traditional to the contemporary and from the basic to the luxury.

Established in 1884 by brothers George Percival and James Baker, the focus was initially on Oriental art, Turkish and Persian embroideries and carpet patterns, setting up an in-house studio in  1893. From 1900, George Percival continuously added to the archive, notably over 400 antique block prints from the Holzach studio in Paris c.1910 and nearly 300 rare printed cotton materials from India.

Within the impressive and unique GP & J Baker treasure trove are also oriental wallpapers, ecclesiastical clothing, Peruvian tunics, French toiles, Indonesian batiks, early English glazed chintzes, original Art Nouveau paintings and hundreds of volumes of vellum-bound pattern books with thousands of original samples from the C18th and C19th.

An avid horticulturalist and following in his father’s green-fingered footsteps, co-founder George Percival introduced quintessential English garden flower and fauna designs into the catalogue which are still some of the company’s most popular signature prints today – Nympheus, Magnolia. Oriental Bird, Peony & Blossom and the Regency-inspired Parador Damask.

Not only can GP & J Baker, draw on their extensive and diverse library and resources, offering the full gamut of textile designs, the company has broadened its reach by collaborating with other design houses Mulberry, Threads, Kravet, Brunschwig & Fils and Lee Jofa.

Producing materials, wall coverings and products for 130 years, supplying to international hotels including The Berkeley, The Connaught, Claridge’s, The Pig Hotel group, Coral Reef Club in Barbados and Kempinski Hotel in Dubai, among others, the manufacturers have also held the Royal Warrant since 1982.
